6 Weeks as Rosewood Studio
Posted on June 1, 2005

After taking Craftsmanship 1A in February 2005, I was fortunate enough to go back in April for six weeks to do a tutored build with Ted Brown.  I had already developed a solid skill set so this would be an opportunity to refine my skill and raise the level of my work.  I arrived with a plan and after a day of doing mockups, I ended up totally redoing my design.  This is one of the concepts that Rosewood tries to instill: a sensitivity to the design and the material.  The piece I finally chose to do was a delicate Silver server in curly cherry resting on a wenge stand.

A lot of what made this piece special are the details that you do not see.  The drawer runners are white oak and are inset into the sides of the cabinet.  They are left proud by 1/32" so that the drawers cannot rub on the inside.  Little leather drawer stops soften the sound of the drawer closing.

In order to prevent the top of the cabinet from getting scratched, leather strips were inset into the bottom edge of the drawer.  Each drawer pull carved and is an extension of the drawer slide.
